The flapper girl was a phenomenon of the 1920s. The term referred to young women who wore wedding dresses that came to the knee, had

short hair that was styled into a bob and who liked to listen to the new music of the time called Jazz. These women were the

laddettes of their time. They went out drinking, liked to smoke and wore very striking make-up. The make-up usually consisted

of bright red lipsticks and heavily made up eyes. This was particularly striking as the women tended to have very pale skin.
During this period of time, flapper dresses were in vogue. Women wore dresses that were loose fitting and had a dropped

waist. This was in complete contrast to the clothing of their mothers, which included fitted undergarments and long wedding dresses

that exposed no skin at all. Lots of flapper dresses were short sleeved with many having embellishments such as beading,

fringing and decorative lace.
Ladies legs were definitely on show during this era with women wearing sheer stockings and garters along with high heeled T

Bar shoes. These elongated the leg and could be very provocative when the women did the energetic dances of the time such as

the Charleston and the Bunny Hug.
In today’s society ladies face no taboos about how they wedding dresses, look are act. We are free to wear our skirts as short as we

like, wear as much make up as we like and drink as much as we like. The flapper girls of the 1920s were forward thinking for

their time and without them, we may not have enjoyed the freedoms that we now have. I therefore salute those ladies with

their flapper wedding dresses and kissproof lips.
